Development of Robert College from 1863 to the Present Day
Founded in 1863 in Der-i Saadet (Istanbul), then the capital of the Ottoman Empire, Robert College set out to provide education in the American style. The institution, which still provides education in English under the Ministry of National Education, later changed its name to Istanbul Robert College. Istanbul Robert College, a private educational institution offering a 5-year education including a preparatory year, for both girls and boys (co-educational), as well as day and boarding students, was founded by two Americans named Cyrus Hamlin and Christopher Robert. Robert College, in its former name, and the American College for Girls, founded in 1871, are sister schools and hold the distinction of being the first American schools established outside the borders of the United States.
Robert College and Boğaziçi University
With the Turkish government establishing Boğaziçi University on its grounds in 1971 under a different administrative understanding, the school also offers higher education opportunities. Boğaziçi University, like Istanbul Robert College, is among the most respected educational institutions in the country. Although I do not approve of the approach of private education, we cannot ignore the quality of the academic staff within it.
